Description

Call for lectures.
Takes place on end of April.

My guess about the audience:
Quite technical, most have heard about Blockchain.
Some with basic understanding about it, some with no clue.
Some consider it one of those buzzword hypes, don't see what it may be really good for.

Thus I propose to split the talk into a philosophical and a technical part.

Proposed message:
Yes, it's currently a hype, as usual leading to some bullshit. But there's huge substance.
Talk about philosophical considerations (see the call to re-decentralize). Decentralize in order to avoid fragility and concentration (-> abuse) of power.
Explain the relationship between Bitcoin and Blockchain (1st App).
Show the basic ingredients: cryptographic hashes, merkle trees, consensus algo (briefly explain PoW, mention that the future may be PoS).
Finally, brief intro into Ethereum (see metaphors: Wiki) as the currently most powerful and active Blockchain ecosystem.
Show 2 or so interesting Dapp examples.
Final message: The Blockchain in 2017 is like the Internet in 1996. We need yet to figure out a lot...

Title: Blockchain Technology

Subtitle: Beyond the Hype

Abstract: Beyond the hype we want to focus on actual and foreseeable applications of Blockchain technology helping us to get a re-decentralized internet and improved privacy.

Description: Blockchain technology is currently one of the most hyped topics and you will find scams just as well as real business value propositions. Knowing what can be done and what is not feasable is likely determining the success of any business proposal.
We also believe that we have a chance to use it for a re-decentralization of the web as proposed by Tim Burners-Lee. Privacy is another highly underrepresented value caused by monopolies and various surveilance tactics by governments and private companies.
Agenda of the talk done by Thomas and Didi:

  • Overview
  • Under the Hood
  • Examples
  • Outlook Disclaimer: Thomas Zeinzinger and Dietmar Hofer are members of BlockchainHub Graz and the lab10 collective. The BlockchainHub Graz is a not-for-profit organization explaining Blockchain technology and building networks. The lab10 collective is a cooperative working on projects focused on decentralization and privacy, while also building a system for the common good.
